You should start with whatever version you will be using. You can’t go wrong with the 2003 version. The 2007 version is pretty much the same but looks fairly different.

Any bookstore will have books on beginners Excel. Maybe “Excel for Dummies”?

Most companies currently use Excel 2003. So right now that may be the version you want to learn. Excel 2007 is the newest version. It is laid out a lot differently than the normal layout of Excel has been in the past. However, I think most people will find after using Excel 2007 that the layout change of Excel 2007 is a very large improvement over the previous versions. The problem is that if you are used to the previous versions it takes a bit to get used to.

If you are going to learn Excel 2007, then I recommend Microsoft’s Excel 2007 Plain & Simple book. The Plain & Simple series of books from Microsoft is laid out very well with a lot of graphic representations that make it easy to understand. You can find them in most any bookstore. The Plain & Simple series of books are bright orange.

For Excel 2003, I’d probably recommend the Step by Step series. Unfortunately, the Plain & Simple series covers Excel 2002 and skips over Excel 2003, although the two are primarily the same thing. The Plain & Simple series isn’t as good for Excel 2002 though.

it depends on how deep you want to get…Excel has A LOT of features that most people don’t use. you can learn a lot from books and CDs and just play around with new stuff.

Excel for Dummies is ok. i would try CDs. i think you’ll get more out of it and it will be more hands on for you. i have personally used cds from video professor and it helped me a ton. I wasnt too computer smart when I started and now I know my way around excel, powerpoint, and even publisher. the best part is that video professor will give you a 10 day free trial, so if you dont like it, you dont have to pay.

The link below will take you to the video professor site.

hope that goes well for you. You can contact me if you have additional questions. I am fairly knowledgeable in microsoft programs.
